Speech Debelle takes the Mercury Prize!

Congrats to Miss Debelle & the entire Big Dada family for the win. It's quite a nice story considering what she overcame in her personal life & who she beat out to get to this point. Check this, Debelle’s father moved out when she was still 7. He went on to father eight more children to six different mothers. Peep the lyrics on Daddy's Little Girl. Asked by her mother to leave home due to her bad behavior and drug abuse, Debelle soon found herself on the streets & homeless. Check the lyrics on Better Days. Heres the complete list of the nominees-

Bat For Lashes – 'Two Suns'
Florence And The Machine – 'Lungs'
Friendly Fires – 'Friendly Fires'
Glasvegas – 'Glasvegas'
The Horrors – 'Primary Colours'
La Roux – 'La Roux'
Led Bib – 'Sensible Shoes'
The Invisible - 'The Invisible'
Lisa Hannigan – 'Sea Sew'
Kasabian – 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'
Speech Debelle – 'Speech Therapy'
Sweet Billy Pilgrim – 'Twice Born Men'

Speech Debelle's debut full length "Speech Therapy" is out now on Big Dada and features production from Lotek.(roots manuva) I've been a big fan of Debelle ever since I got a hold of the lead single The Key. Truth be told, I don't play her stuff nearly enough. Heres a very nice loose swinging version as performed by Speech & her band the Therapists on Watch Listen Tell.
